Maintenance
The Water Division regularly exercises and maintains approximately 800 fire hydrants in the City of Zion.
Flushing
All fire hydrants are flushed on a yearly basis. Hydrants are flushed to help improve water quality. For example, flushing helps maintain good chlorine residual throughout the system, as well as helps reduce scale from the water main. Flushing every hydrant on a yearly basis is also a great preventative maintenance. It allows the opportunity to inspect each hydrant and make sure they are in good working order.
Hydrant flushing is done in the fall. The schedule is published in the paper. Please be advised not to do any washing on the day of hydrant flushing. It is also recommended that you not wash until 4:00 P.M. the following day of flushing hydrants in your area. Hydrant Flushing schedule can be found here.
